Illustration
A set of hand-engraved legal motifs and wide-format scenics — the firm's heritage voice. Two sub-categories: Spot Illustrations (nine legal subjects, isolated with transparent backgrounds) and Hero Illustrations (city skylines and the NC cardinal — wide-format, edge-to-edge). Each ships in three tokenized colorways: navy, gold, ivory.
Tokenized colorways
Files are named {motif}-{colorway}.png — e.g. scales-gold.png. The colorway is the token: pick the variant whose contrast clears the surface beneath it.
| Colorway | Token | Hex | Goes on | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| navy | --navy-800 | #10243d | Light surfaces | Default ink. Highest contrast on ivory & white. |
| gold | --gold-400 | #c2a15a | Dark / photo surfaces | Premium accent. Sings on navy; decorative-only on light. |
| ivory | --neutral-100 | #f6f2ea | Dark / photo surfaces | Reversed knockout. Navy & photo surfaces only. |
Sub-category A · Spot Illustrations
Nine legal subjects, isolated assets with transparent backgrounds that do not fill edge to edge. Used as foreground accents, centered images, or section watermarks in content bands and page sections.
The set & when to use it
Each motif shown in all three colorways on the surface it's built for, with a meaning and a usage cue. The attention badge mirrors the colour system — how much visual weight the motif should carry.

nc-cardinal-bird-navy.pngnc-cardinal-bird-gold.pngnc-cardinal-bird-ivory.pngLarge Hero style (Hero Illustrations only)
Large Hero illustrations fill the entire section edge to edge and are only placed in hero/pagehead bands. Two delivery modes:
- Background —
marketing-illus-hero-bg: absolutethat covers the full section (object-fit: cover) behind the content at ~20% opacity. Matches the section's background color. Use the ivory colorway on dark (deep/navy) bands. - Foreground circle —
marketing-illus-circle: full-opacity image cropped to a circle with a border colored by the combo's--c-accenttoken. Can be placed left, right, or centered, and sized medium (320 px) or large (460 px). Use the navy colorway on light (ivory/sand) bands. Never place text inside or overlapping the circle.
Durham anchors the Research Triangle — a fast-growing city built around Duke University, RTP, and a deep community of families.
- Background: use ivory colorway on dark surfaces; let the image cover the entire section.
- Foreground circle: use navy colorway on light surfaces; border color =
--c-accentof the hosting combo. - Place foreground circles left, right, or centered — all three are valid.
- Use medium (320 px) or large (460 px) circle sizes.
- Match the illustration to the city page it lives on.
- Don't use Hero illustrations as mid-page section watermarks — they are too wide.
- Don't place text inside or overlapping the circle.
- Don't use Large Hero illustrations for Spot Illustrations — this style is Hero Illustrations only.
- Don't mix a Hero illustration with a Spot Illustration watermark in the same band.
- Don't use city skyline illustrations on non-city pages; match illustration to the page's place or identity.
Foreground vs. subtle background
The same motif plays two roles — and the role dictates the technique:
- Foreground split (focal, full-opacity): render it as an
(use.marketing-figure) in a split column viamarketing-sec--figuredormarketing-sec--figured--left. Illustration and prose sit in separate columns — never overlapping. - Foreground centered (focal, full-opacity): render it as an
with.marketing-figure.marketing-figure--center, placed in the flow of center-aligned content — e.g., between a headline and an eyebrow, or between a section head and the carousel. Must sit in its own clear space with breathing room above and below. Never overlap text. - Background watermark (texture only): use the
marketing-sec--art-*mask, sitting behind the text at ~6–10% opacity so copy reads cleanly on top.
Body copy sits cleanly on top.
Illustration rhythm & variety
Repeating the same illustration style back-to-back flattens the page. Before placing an illustration, audit the full page and vary along at least one axis. Reserve illustrations for key sections only — not every sub-section.
Placement options
| Placement | Technique | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Left split | marketing-sec--figured--left | Visual-led hero-weight sections |
| Right split | marketing-sec--figured | Feature sections where prose leads |
| Center inline | marketing-figure--center | Center-aligned content — between heading and subhead |
| Background watermark | marketing-sec--art-* | Texture in text-heavy or supporting bands |
- Alternate placement on consecutive illustrated sections — don't use the same layout twice in a row.
- Vary colorway when the same motif reappears — navy on one band, gold or ivory on the next.
- Reserve illustrations for key moments: anchors, trust sections, emotional beats.
- Scan the full page before adding — if the motif or layout already appears nearby, choose a different one.
- Don't repeat the same illustration style (e.g., background-right watermark) on back-to-back sections.
- Don't illustrate every section — sparse placement keeps each illustration special.
- Don't reuse the same motif twice on one page without clear visual distance between instances.
- Don't use the same colorway on adjacent sections with matching color combos.
Do & don't
- Pick the colorway that clears contrast on its surface.
- Use one anchor motif per view; let it breathe.
- Drop opacity to ~6–10% when using as a background watermark.
- Keep illustrations and photography apart — one or the other per band.
- Don't recolor outside the three tokenized colorways.
- Don't place ivory motifs on light or gold motifs on white as text.
- Don't crowd several motifs together — they compete.
- Don't stretch or skew; scale uniformly only.
Prompt guide
Generate new illustrations that stay true to the Pierce Law Group hand-engraved style. The art direction block is fixed — hold it constant across every generation. Choose a fill color, a format, and describe the subject. Copy the assembled prompt directly into your image-generation tool (GPT-Image, Midjourney, Firefly, Ideogram, etc.).
Master art direction — hold constant
Single-color hand-engraved illustration for Pierce Law Group, a premium North Carolina estate-planning, probate, and elder-law firm. Heritage style — the mark of a trusted Southern institution.
- Style
- Hand-engraved illustration in the tradition of 19th-century steel engraving and copperplate etching. The aesthetic of certificates, law-book frontispieces, banknote vignettes, and official seals. Precise, authoritative, quietly warm — never digital-gradient, never illustrative, never decorative-modern.
- Linework
- Fine parallel hatching and cross-hatching build all depth, volume, and texture through line density — never shading, blending, airbrush, or gradients. Every tonal shift is achieved by spacing lines closer together or farther apart. No filled areas; no washes; no painterly marks. The lines themselves are the image.
- Color rule
- Exactly one flat fill color throughout — specified per generation below. Every line, every shape is the same single solid hue on a transparent background. Zero second colors: no contrasting outline, no highlight layer, no shadow in a different tone, no background tint. One color, full stop.
- Background
- Fully transparent — alpha channel PNG with no ground plane, no vignette, no cast shadow, no environment color. The motif floats in clean negative space, ready to composite on any surface.
- Detail level
- High internal detail. Small elements — feathers, columns, book spines, foliage, brickwork, rope, scales — must be individually articulated with fine engraved lines. The illustration should reward close inspection at full size. Overall silhouette reads clearly at small scale; intricate linework reveals itself at large scale.
- Composition
- Spot: subject is centered on a square canvas with generous breathing room on all sides — the motif does not touch the edges. Hero: subject fills the full width edge to edge in a wide panoramic (≈3:1 landscape) — details extend to the frame boundary.
- Mood
- Authoritative, warm, and quietly proud. The heritage weight of a respected Southern institution. Never clip-art or icon-flat. Never cartoon or playful. Never corporate-generic or cold. The tone of a firm that has served families for generations.
- Lettering
- If the subject includes text, inscriptions, or letterforms (a seal motto, book spine title, document heading, monogram), render each character as a precisely engraved glyph — clean, upright, fully legible at the intended size. Spell out every word character by character in the SUBJECT field. Avoid condensed or fused letter clusters. If legibility cannot be guaranteed, use a purely symbolic or ornamental treatment instead (a decorative rule, a lozenge border, or a blank ribbon).
- Never
- No gradients. No color fills or washes. No photorealism or semi-realism. No outlines in a contrasting color. No baked-in text, lettering, or watermarks unless explicitly specified in the subject. No drop shadows, glows, or inner-shadow effects. No halftone dots. No second fill color. Exactly one fill color — the one specified. No garbled, distorted, fused, or AI-invented letterforms — every character must be a recognizable, legible glyph or omitted entirely.
Build your prompt
Be specific: name the object, describe its posture or angle, and call out any meaningful details — open book vs. closed, gavel raised vs. resting at rest, scales balanced vs. tipped.
